Student Services · Aotearoa New Zealand

Once a student lands, we take it from there.

Kindred looks after everything a student needs on the ground in New Zealand — trip logistics, homestay accommodation, caregiver services and social life. We work alongside families, education agents and institutions to create a supported experience from planning through to arrival and beyond.

What we manage

Four services. One point of contact.

Students come to us directly, or through the agents and institutions we partner with. Either way, we coordinate the practical support they need to live, settle and thrive in New Zealand — including pre-departure preparation, accommodation, local support and arrival planning.

Trip Logistics

Flight coordination, airport transfers, orientation scheduling and travel documentation — handled door to door so nothing falls between the cracks.

Social & Cultural Activities

Weekend trips, cultural events and social meet-ups that turn a study abroad year into real friendships and real belonging. From thermal pools and beach days to laser tag and farm visits, with appropriate supervision based on the activity, group and programme arrangements.

The journey

From arrival to belonging

Those first few weeks matter most — here's how we make sure students feel right at home, from day one and every week after.

01

Arrival

We meet the student at the airport, handle transfers, and walk them through their first day — no one navigates a new country alone.

02

Settling in

Homestay placement is confirmed ahead of arrival and introduced in person, with a welcome pack and house orientation.

03

Ongoing care

Their caregiver checks in often, keeps the school in the loop, and is just a call away whenever they need a hand.

04

Belonging

Social and cultural activities run throughout the stay, connecting students with peers and with New Zealand itself.

What guides us

Five values behind every placement

01

Care

Every student seen and supported on a personal level.

02

Trust

Reliable, transparent and consistent — every time, for every family, school and host.

03

Connection

Bridges between people, cultures and communities.

04

Empowerment

Guidance that builds confidence and independence.

05

Excellence

High standards in every detail of day-to-day care.

For schools & agents

You keep the relationship. We deliver the care.

Kindred works alongside schools, education agents and providers as their on-the-ground student-care partner in New Zealand. You retain your education and client relationship; we manage the agreed care, accommodation, activities and local support.

  • Programmes you can offer your own students, delivered by us
  • One dedicated coordinator per cohort
  • Regular wellbeing and progress reporting
  • Vetted, insured homestay network across NZ

"We stopped worrying about logistics the moment Kindred took over on-arrival care."

— International Programme Coordinator, Partner School

Programme partnerships

Programmes your students can join

Alongside supporting students you've already enrolled, Kindred offers selected New Zealand programmes that partner agents and institutions can introduce to their own families. We coordinate the programme and student-care experience in New Zealand, while you retain your client relationship.

01

You offer it

Present Kindred programmes to your families as part of your own catalogue, under your existing relationship with them.

02

We coordinate it

We coordinate the New Zealand programme experience — education-provider arrangements where applicable, homestay, caregiver support, activities, transfers and pre-departure support.

03

You stay informed

Regular wellbeing and progress reporting back to you throughout, so you're never guessing how your students are doing.

Common questions

Before you get in touch

Students come to Kindred in different ways — through education agents and institutions, directly through families, or through one of our own programmes. We can support students who are already enrolled with an education provider, or coordinate selected programmes that combine education with Kindred student care.

Any parent or student interested in studying or spending time in New Zealand — and the agents and institutions who support them. Whether a student arrives through a partner agency or comes to us directly, the care on the ground is the same.

We help coordinate the practical arrangements before departure — programme documentation, travel information, insurance where applicable, accommodation details and arrival planning — so students and families know what to expect before they leave home.

Our homestay selection process is designed around student safety and suitability. Host families are interviewed, homes are assessed, and appropriate checks are completed before placement. We also stay in contact throughout the placement so students and hosts have ongoing support.

Students are given a clear local point of contact based on the support included in their programme. Students receiving Kindred caregiver services have a dedicated caregiver, with emergency support available according to their service arrangements.

Student care first. Kindred's core business is supporting students in New Zealand through accommodation, caregiver services, activities, logistics and programme management. For selected programmes, Kindred may also assist with enrolment as an authorised education agent of the education provider. Education is delivered by the relevant New Zealand education provider, not by Kindred.

Yes — that's the core of what we do. Head to the Partners section or get in touch to talk through your next cohort.

Let's talk about your next cohort

Tell us where your students are coming from and when they arrive — we'll take it from the tarmac.

Homestay

Safe homes, chosen with care.

Every host family is vetted, interviewed, and checked in on for as long as they host — because a homestay only works when it actually feels like home.

Vetting

How we vet every host family

No family is approved on a form alone — every home is assessed in person, and stays accountable for as long as they host.

  • Main caregiver must be 25+ and a NZ permanent resident or citizen
  • A private bedroom in the main home — never shared, unless agreed in advance
  • Appropriate safety and suitability checks are completed for relevant adult household members, including police vetting where required
  • A referee provided for each caregiver in the household
  • Whole family present for an in-person homestay assessment interview
  • Ongoing monitoring and review during the placement, including home visits where required by Kindred, the education provider or the applicable placement arrangements
What's included

What every homestay provides

The room

  • Window, door that closes, and full privacy
  • Bed, linen, blankets and a duvet
  • Desk, chair, mirror, lamp and storage
  • Warm, well-ventilated, with safe heating

Daily life

  • Three meals each day, including an appropriate school lunch on school days, together with reasonable snacks
  • Reliable internet connection at the homestay
  • Access to appropriate laundry facilities, with household guidance on how and when to use them
  • A trip to the supermarket to find food they actually enjoy
  • A genuine place at the family table, not just a room to rent
Day to day

How the household supports your student

Host families agree to clear expectations, so every student knows what to expect too.

  • A safe, nurturing environment with the same rights as any child in the home
  • Privacy respected — no one enters the student's room without permission
  • The family always knows where the student is and how to reach them
  • Accompanied to and from school for the first few days, even if they say they don't need it
  • Genuine interest taken in how school is going
  • All financial and placement matters run through Kindred — never discussed directly with the family
Peace of mind

What happens if something comes up

Homestay fees are agreed and paid in advance for the placement period. If a genuine safety or wellbeing concern arises, we'll assess the circumstances and work with the student, Host Family and relevant parties on an appropriate response. If a student asks to move primarily because of personal preference and there is no substantiated safety, welfare, suitability or material service concern with the existing placement, the standard 14-day accommodation notice period applies and a relocation and coordination fee equivalent to one week's applicable homestay rate may also apply. If a medical or welfare emergency arises, Kindred will follow the emergency arrangements and authorities applicable to the student's programme and support services, and will work with the Host Family, education provider and Parent/Legal Guardian as appropriate. Full terms are set out in the Client Agreement, Parent/Student Homestay Terms and Placement Confirmation provided for the placement — this page is a plain-language summary, not a substitute for it.

Caregiver Service

A real person, not a hotline.

Students who require caregiver support are paired with a dedicated local caregiver for the agreed period of their stay. The level of support is tailored to the student's age, programme and circumstances.

What we cover

What your caregiver does for you

This isn't a once-a-term check-in. It's ongoing, hands-on support across everything a student needs to settle and thrive.

  • Attends school meetings with the student — or for them, if needed
  • Goes along to doctor's appointments and monitors ongoing health
  • Helps set up the practical things — bank account, bus card, library card
  • Keeps an eye on wellbeing throughout their time in New Zealand
  • Stays in touch via messages, calls, emails, and in-person meetings
  • Handles airport pickup on arrival and drop-off when it's time to head home
  • Keeps the school updated on anything important happening in the student's life
  • Communicates with family, school and others when needed
Always reachable

However they need to reach us

Every student receiving Kindred caregiver support, along with their parent or school where appropriate, has a direct line to their caregiver — not a shared inbox or call queue.

Messages Phone calls Email In-person meetings 24/7 emergency contact
Most importantly: for students receiving Kindred Caregiver Service, their caregiver is their dedicated local point of contact, with emergency support available 24/7 during the agreed service period.
Compliant by design. Our caregiver service is delivered in line with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. Every welfare, school and family matter runs through your caregiver as the single point of contact — so nothing gets lost between people.

How we handle your information.

We collect personal information to arrange and deliver student services. This page explains what we collect, why, who sees it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Social & Cultural Activities

The part they'll actually remember.

Classes fill the weekdays. What turns a few months in New Zealand into the year they never stop talking about is everything around them — the beach days, the hot pools, the friends made in a bowling alley.

How it works

Group activities, fully looked after

Activities run throughout the student's stay, as a group, always accompanied by a Kindred caregiver — no student is ever dropped somewhere and left to it.

  • A caregiver accompanies every outing, start to finish
  • Transport to and from the activity is arranged
  • Entry tickets included where the activity requires them
  • Meals or snacks provided depending on the outing
  • Students meet peers from other countries, not just their own
  • Scheduled around school hours — mostly evenings and weekends
A typical month

What the rhythm looks like

An example of how activities tend to spread across four weeks. Tap through to see how a month usually unfolds.

Finding their feet

Early days — getting oriented and meeting the other students.

City orientation

A proper look around Christchurch, so the place starts feeling navigable rather than foreign.

Canoeing at the Botanic Gardens

Out on the Avon River, followed by a picnic in Hagley Park.

Quake City

The museum telling the story of the Canterbury earthquakes — the best way to understand the city they're living in.

Hot pools & bowling lanes

Settling in — the point where friendships usually start forming properly.

Bowling night

Low-key, loud, and the fastest way to get a group of students talking to each other.

Hanmer Springs

A day trip north to the thermal pools and waterslides, about 90 minutes from the city.

Laser tag & the coast

By now they know their way around and the group has found its rhythm.

Laser tag

Competitive, chaotic, and reliably the activity students bring up months later.

Beach day at Sumner

Christchurch's seaside suburb — sand, surf, and fish and chips on the esplanade.

Wildlife & getting out of town

Venturing further afield now that everyone's comfortable.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Native New Zealand wildlife, including the chance to actually see a kiwi.

Farm visit

A side of New Zealand most students have only seen in pictures.

This is an example, not a fixed schedule. Activities shift by day, time and type depending on weather, season, group size and what's on locally. Students always know the plan in advance.
The regulars

Where students end up

A mix of outdoors, culture and the kind of thing that's just good fun after a week of classes.

Hanmer Springs

Natural thermal pools and waterslides in the alpine village north of the city. A full day out, and usually a favourite.

Day trip

Botanic Gardens canoeing

Paddling the Avon through the middle of the city, then a picnic in Hagley Park. Calm, green, and very Christchurch.

Outdoors

Quake City

The story of the Canterbury earthquakes and the rebuild — the single best way to understand the city.

Culture

Bowling

An easy evening out that does more for group friendships than almost anything else on the calendar.

Evening

Laser tag

Competitive and loud. Reliably the activity that comes up first when students talk about their time here.

Evening

Sumner Beach

Christchurch's seaside suburb, twenty minutes from town — a proper beach day when the weather plays along.

Outdoors

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Native New Zealand wildlife, including the chance to actually see a kiwi — which surprises most students.

Nature

Farm visits

A side of New Zealand most students have only seen in pictures — and one of the more memorable culture shocks.

Culture

Group dinners

Marking the milestones — arrivals, birthdays, and goodbyes — with everyone around one table.

Study Programmes

Study in New Zealand.

Whether it's a few weeks of English, a term at a New Zealand high school, or a longer university pathway — we arrange the study and look after everything around it.

Choose a pathway

Four ways to study here

Each pathway is supported by Kindred's on-the-ground student-care services, tailored to the student's age, programme and circumstances — including accommodation, local support, transport, activities and pre-departure preparation where applicable.

Kindred programmes

Education + Student Care

Kindred programmes combine study with comprehensive student support in New Zealand. Education is delivered by the named New Zealand education provider, while Kindred manages the student-care and programme experience, including accommodation, activities, local support and logistics. Where applicable, Kindred may also assist with enrolment as an authorised education agent of the education provider.

For agents & institutions

Already managing the enrolment?

Kindred can provide student-care services independently of education recruitment. Your existing enrolment and client relationship remains with you, while Kindred manages the agreed student-care services in New Zealand.

The right level of support

Support that fits the student

Younger students and programmes requiring caregiver support are paired with a dedicated local caregiver. Other students receive the level of local support appropriate to their age, programme and circumstances.

Not sure which pathway fits? Tell us the student's age, English level and how long they'd like to stay, and we'll set out the realistic options — including timing, since school and university intakes work on fixed calendars.
Education provider relationships. Kindred works with selected New Zealand education providers and may receive a commission or other remuneration from a provider when a student enrols through Kindred. We will disclose any relevant provider relationship as part of the enrolment process.

Interested in a programme?

Send us the student's details and we'll come back with pathways, timing and availability.

Work with us

Look after someone’s child abroad.

Our work depends entirely on the people doing it — the families who open their homes, the caregivers students call first, and the team keeping it all running.

Roles

Where we’re looking for people

We recruit year-round rather than by vacancy, because student numbers shift with each intake. If a role fits you, get in touch — we'd rather know you early.

Independent Education Representatives

Help connect students and families with selected Kindred programmes in New Zealand. We provide programme training, approved resources and ongoing support so you can represent Kindred confidently in your market.

  • Complete Kindred representative training
  • Work independently and flexibly
  • Access approved programme information and resources
  • Introduce prospective students and families to Kindred
  • Receive ongoing support from our New Zealand team
  • Kindred manages enrolment coordination, programme delivery and student care

Homestay Families

Host an international student in your home. You provide a private room, three meals each day, including an appropriate school lunch on school days, reasonable snacks, and a genuine place at the family table. Paid according to the agreed placement arrangements.

  • Main caregiver aged 25+, NZ citizen or permanent resident
  • A private bedroom in the main home
  • Appropriate safety and suitability checks for relevant adult household members, including police vetting where required
  • An in-person home assessment with the whole family

Caregivers

Be the person a student calls first. You'll check in regularly, attend school meetings, go along to medical appointments, and be reachable when something goes wrong.

  • Police vetting and reference checks
  • A full NZ driver licence and your own vehicle
  • Availability outside school hours, including some weekends
  • A second language is valued, not required

Activity Leaders

Run the weekend trips and evening outings — the beach days, hot pools and bowling nights that turn a placement into a good year. Casual and seasonal work.

  • Confident leading groups of teenagers
  • First aid certification, or willingness to obtain it
  • Police vetting
  • Weekend and school-holiday availability

Administration & Operations

Coordinate placements, bookings, documentation and partner communication. The work that means nothing gets missed between a family in one country and a school in another.

  • Strong written communication
  • Comfortable juggling timelines across time zones
  • Experience in education, travel or student services is a plus
  • Based in or near Christchurch
What we look for

The same thing in every role

  • People who treat a student like they'd want their own child treated
  • Reliability — families are trusting us from the other side of the world
  • Patience with someone finding their feet in a new country
  • Comfort working across cultures and language barriers
  • Willingness to complete police vetting and reference checks
  • The judgement to escalate early when something feels off
